What Panchakarma Involves

Panchakarma means "five actions" — a classical Ayurvedic system of preparatory therapies, a core cleansing procedure, and a structured recovery phase, all sequenced to support the body's own balance rather than force a quick result.

  • Led by a professional Ayurvedic doctor (MSc, PhD in Nutrition), integrating classical Ayurveda with modern nutrition science
  • Every program starts with a constitution (Prakriti) and current-imbalance (Vikriti) assessment — no two protocols are identical
  • Screened carefully first — Panchakarma is not appropriate for every condition, and we say so honestly when it isn't the right fit
  • Supported by a structured post-therapy diet (Samsarjana Krama) so the benefits are built on, not lost within weeks
  • Traditionally used to support digestion, immunity, energy levels and stress reduction as the body's own detoxification processes are supported

The Five Classical Panchakarma Therapies

Each procedure targets a specific dosha. Which ones form part of your program depends entirely on your assessment.

Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis) — Kapha

A supervised, controlled procedure used to help expel excess Kapha and support conditions such as asthma, obesity and bronchitis, while also aiding respiratory clearing.

Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation) — Pitta

Herbal laxatives used to cleanse the intestines and help clear Pitta-related imbalance, commonly supportive for liver function, skin conditions and digestive concerns.

Basti (Medicated Enema Therapy) — Vata

Often considered the most significant of the five actions for Vata. Two types are used — Anuvasana (oil enema) and Niruha (decoction enema) — to cleanse the colon and support digestion.

Nasya (Nasal Administration Therapy)

Medicated oils or powders instilled through the nasal passage to help clear the head and neck region — commonly used for sinusitis, migraines and certain neurological concerns.

Raktamokshana (Bloodletting)

A specialised blood-purification technique — used far less often than the other four — reserved for specific skin and blood-related conditions and applied only after careful case selection.

Our 5-Step Panchakarma Process

A genuine Panchakarma program unfolds in stages — rushing any one of them reduces what the rest can achieve.

  1. STEP 01

    Assessment & Constitution Analysis

A detailed review of your Prakriti (constitution), current Vikriti (imbalance), health history and medications to confirm suitability.

  2. STEP 02

    Purvakarma — Preparatory Therapies

Snehan (internal and external oleation with medicated oils or ghee) and Swedana (steam-induced sweating) loosen toxins and open the body's channels ahead of the core procedure.

  3. STEP 03

    Pradhanakarma — The Core Procedure

The specific procedure selected for you — Vamana, Virechana, Basti or Nasya — carried out under supervision.

  4. STEP 04

    Paschatkarma — Structured Recovery Diet

Sansarjana Krama — the gradual, staged reintroduction of normal food — rebuilds digestive strength, paired with Rasayana (rejuvenation) support and guidance on daily routine.

  5. STEP 05

    Follow-Up & Rasayana Support

Rejuvenation guidance and periodic follow-up to help the results of your program hold over the following months.

A note on your medical care: Panchakarma is not appropriate for everyone. Pregnancy, acute illness, certain heart conditions, uncontrolled diabetes and general frailty all need medical clearance first, and some procedures are unsuitable regardless. Please disclose your full medical history, current medications and any ongoing treatment before we recommend a protocol — and continue any medication your physician has prescribed unless they advise otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions About Panchakarma

Honest answers to common questions about Panchakarma therapy at Ravide Wellness.

What exactly is Panchakarma?

It's a classical Ayurvedic system of five main cleansing procedures, each preceded by preparatory therapies and followed by a structured recovery diet. Which procedures apply to you depends on your constitution and current imbalance — it isn't one fixed protocol for everyone.

Is Panchakarma safe for everyone?

No, and we say so honestly. Pregnancy, acute illness, certain cardiac conditions, uncontrolled diabetes and general frailty all rule out some or all procedures. We assess your full history before recommending anything, and would rather decline a therapy than risk your safety.

How long does a Panchakarma program take?

A complete program — preparation, core procedure and recovery diet — typically spans one to three weeks depending on which procedures are included and how you respond. Shorter, lighter versions exist, but they trade off some of the benefit.

Will I need to take time off work?

For the core procedure days, yes — your body needs rest, and pushing through a normal workday during this phase works against the therapy. We'll map out exactly which days need to be kept clear when we design your protocol.

Is Panchakarma uncomfortable or painful?

Most people describe the preparatory therapies (oil massage, sweating) as deeply relaxing. The core procedures can be physically demanding for a day or two, which is expected and monitored — we explain what to expect for your specific protocol before you start.

Can I do a shorter program if I can't commit to the full duration?

Yes. Shorter, lighter programs are possible and can still be genuinely useful. We'll be upfront that skipping preparation or recovery reduces the benefit and increases risk, so you can make an informed choice about the trade-off.
